Image 1. Dave Pfriem asked me to write about St. Joe's wining the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League Championship. My memory was foggy, but Lee D'Onle found the attached newspaper clippings in his yearbook. Â Here's what I remember with the help of those clippings.
Several members of our chess club started hanging around the Cleveland Chess Center in the downtown area. We kept hearing about these two guys, Presser and Di Lillo, who dominated the local scene. Â One day we heard about the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess League. So I thought, 'What the heck. Let's give it a go.' After consulting with the team and the powers that be, I enrolled our club. We were on the way.
We kept winning match after match. We wound up in the final competition match with the revered Shaw High School team. Â Five of us (Lee D'Onle, Bob Hauser, Bill Moss, Bill Arthur, and I) made the journey to the chess center in downtown Cleveland. Â Branko Yelich, another member of our team, wasn't playing this particular match.
