Szalay, Rich. Here is a tribute to Rich from classmate Gary Gilroy: Rich was a lifelong friend and I'll miss him. We had not seen each other for several years, but my memories of him remain fresh. We went to kindergarten together at Victory Park School, were classmates at St. Gregory's for eight years, than at St. Joe's for four more years. What mischief we got into and fun we had! I can still picture Rich in his rented Viking outfit at football games in our senior year. He was frequently the designated driver for our escapades when we 'borrowed' and found temporary new owners for lawn ornaments or when we remodeled mail boxes with M-80s. Another fond memory was sitting in the car at Manner's drive-in and ordering gallons of coffee after winter basketball games. Rich was one of the hardest working kids I knew. I think he began repairing typewriters while still in grade school.
I was thrilled when romance bloomed between Rich & Jeanine and led to their happy marriage and wonderful family.
I know he had many struggles with his health, but he always fought back and made the most of his life. He was a great friend. May he rest in peace.
