Hurley, John. Many classmates remember John for his dry sense of humor. Classmate Frank McMullen remembers this about John. Others recall how astute he was as a student at Saint Joe's. Classmate Gary Noel remembers John as being released ten minutes early from class each day so that he could catch a local bus to get to Chardon Road and Euclid Avenue...in order to catch a bus to get to distant Painesville each day. John remained friends with many classmates and was able to attend the sixty-first reunion of the class of 1961.
John J. Hurley Jr., age 79, passed away June 10, 2023, in Bluffton, South Carolina. He was born October 13, 1943, in Chillicothe, Ohio to John J. Hurley Sr. and Elizabeth (Parks) Hurley.
John had a very fulfilling life, he was a graduate of St. Joseph High School, Class of 1961, graduated from John Carroll University in 1965 and Case Western Reserve School of Law in 1968. He was a partner in the Nelson, Sweet and Hurley Law Firm in Painesville. John was a former Lake County Common Pleas Court Assignment Commissioner, member and past President of the Lake County Bar Association, member of the Ohio State Bar Association, and former Chair of the Ohio State Bar Association Insurance Law Committee. He was awarded the Lake County Bar President’s Award and was honored for 50 years of service to the legal profession by the Ohio State Bar Association.
In 2007, John successfully argued the State V. Brooke case in the Ohio Supreme Court.
John was also a Board Member of the Legal Aid Society, Board member and past President of the Lake Hospital System, Founding Member of Western Reserve GYRO, Vice President Friday the 13th Club and was a former member of Madison Country Club. John served as a volunteer for Hospice of the Western Reserve and was a member of St. Gabriel Parish in Concord Township .
John enjoyed the company of his family and friends. He enjoyed playing golf and all sports. He had a very dry sense of humor for a serious lawyer.
John is survived by his wife, Tara Kim (Wilson) Hurley; siblings, Michael (June) Hurley, Thomas (Robbie) Hurley, Betty (Harlan) Silversten, Melissa (Thomas) Ferguson, Timothy (Mary) Hurley, Christopher (Gail) Hurley, and Mary Anne (Michael) Leon, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister and brother-in-law, Susanne and Phillip Reed.
Friends will be received 2:00 – 6:00 PM, Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Spear Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Avenue, Painesville, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 AM, Monday, June 26th at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township, Ohio. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
