Schwerko, Paul. Paul relates this story of his service: 'I was drafted in January 1965 and was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky for basic training. From there I was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to receive training in guided missiles.
From there I was sent to serve in Germany for 19 months—in 1965 and ’66. My post was Nierenberg. I was able to take a vacation with my friend and classmate Tim Ryan. In 20 days I was able to visit: Italy (Rome), France (Nice), Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. We managed to get all this in during my twenty days of leave.'
